Please Stop Updating

Bethesda loves to push updates to Skyrim and Fallout unannounced. Keep forgetting how to lock it down so I can wait until the Script Extender folks have a change to update. Found the reddit post so keeping it here:

  1. Be sure to go to your Steam Skyrim update settings and set automatic updates to only update when you launch it (from Steam, always launch from SKSE shortcut to prevent game update)
  2. Press Windows + R
  3. Input: steam://nav/console
  4. In the console: download_depot 489830 489833 1298692161422189837
  5. Check Steam Depot for the latest manifest ID! This is the last number in that command, and has probably changed if you're viewing this months later.
  6. Navigate to Steam\SteamApps\content\app_489830\depot_489833
  7. Cut or Copy the SkyrimSE.exe
  8. Navigate to Steam\SteamApps\common\Skyrim Special Edition
  9. Paste the SkyrimSE.exe, overwriting when prompted.
Today's reddit post author was kind enough to include the new IDs:
and the number you need to replace is the third one so like this:

download_depot 489830 489833 583541185188584076

Edit: to be clear. This is to go back to the previous patch (august 2018). If you still have the previous skse you need the version before this.

World of Warcraft Patch 6.0.2: The Iron Tide

Finally time for some new content. While Mists of Pandaria was an enjoyable expansion it went on far too long. I assume it will happen with Warlords so this will likely be the last expansion I play World of Warcraft.

Recorded a quick video of parking my Hunter out by the Dark Portal. In retrospect that may not have been a good idea. It will be lag city so I may not be able to log into her first.

I should log into some of my other characters anyway. As I mentioned in the video I am most excited about the Toy Box. Silly as that sounds it's going to save me TONS of bag space and most of the awesome rare trinkets I've collected over the last decade are now available to all my toons.

Of course the removal of hit/expertise/reforging is a close second. Having more than fifteen characters across the two servers has been exhausting. It's going to be a lot easier to maintain raid-ready alts.

I'm concerned most about the tradeskills changes; seems like Blizzard trivializing all of them. Removing their bonuses along with giving all the basics to the garrison is strange. The only benefit to having a profession is the ability to make high-end crafted pieces. But there is so much competition and they're so easily replaced by raid drops... how is this going to work out? Guess I'll find out over the next few months.

The real dread is unavoidable: addons. *sigh* Many of the ones I use have been updated in the last week so hopefully the authors can keep up with whatever get actually released. I suppose the only critical addon I need is WeakAuras. If it dies there's are other addons out there but none with it's power and flexibility.

As to raiding, I'm not sure what's going on. I don't think I'll make the 20-cut on the top-tier team. Little ego damage but I'll get over it. I already have the mount anyway so I should be helping out the second team. Or third. Or whatever ends up happening. I do enjoy Eternal Kingdom but, as usual, I am certain I'll be hedging and raiding elsewhere.

Audio Books ... in Skyrim?!

Gopher just tweeted about an interesting mod project: Read Books Aloud. It's a framework for trying audio to the books in-game made by Chesko (a great author famed for Frostfall). So great to see innovation still coming almost a year-and-a-half after release.

In other Skyrim news… patch 1.9 was announced. The beta is already available so I probably should look into using it. Will need to have a project or two updated possibly.

Similar to 1.6 it really only adds one major feature: Legendary Skills and difficulty. It is also the vehicle for a number of bug fixes.

You Picked a Bad Time to Patch, Friend

Spent a little time over on the new Island then came back to Skyrim to wrap up some minor quests and store all my new reagents/armor. Had a couple of crashes so decided to restart the computer. Trying to launch the game I was just greeted with:

The Update News button was useless. Just a link to the Skyrim newsfeed where the official announcement was up along with a "63 days later here we go PC users!" blurb. Nosing around the folders there was nothing new except in the Data folder. There's another 1gb texture file: HighResTexturePack03. Yay!

Erm… maybe. Starting to wonder if all these crashes are due to my video card getting max'd out. Might be time to upgrade the old GeForce 450.

Patch 5.0.4 Delay #1

Wasn't around when the server's were supposed to be back up. Now an hour-and-a-half later they're still down. Heh. Not surprised but I'm sure things are a-buzz at Blizzard HQ. With today being the official launch day of Guild Wars 2 Blizzard needs to have new and exciting things in the sub-based world available.

Decided it's time to do the annual clean sweep so I've cleared out the AddOns and WTF folders. It can be pretty painful to lose settings and preferences but I'm bad about not keeping all the detritus cleaned up. So far the only AddOns I've re-added are IceHUD and TidyPlates. Would like to get DBM going and a few others, but there's going to be a lot of fixes over the next few days. Will survive until things settle down.

It's going to take a long time to go through all the toons. I've been meaning to copy things over to beta forever but yeah. Pretty happy with the DK and Shaman but the rest should be interesting.

Speaking of interesting... wonder what's going on in Theramore now. Damn servers.

Grace Period Maintenance Un-Graceful

Attempted to get into SWTOR this morning and the client gave me this news...

This was a surprise to me as I'd already entered my Deluxe Code and been driving around on my Longspur STAP. So I click on the link and naturally get a queue...

This seems like a big enough problem to try talking to someone about. So I call 1-855-GO-SWTOR (1-855-467-9867) only to be told they're too busy. No call times or hold queue, just disconnected. *rolls eyes* So I filled out the webform...

I'm guessing the Grace Period maintenance screwed something up. BioWare does do great offline games. Yet they're still learning on the MMOs. Glad I'm not working in their tech or CS departments. It must be the worst Christmas ever for those people.

And I have to wonder… are the people at Blizzard secretly enjoying all this?
